It is possible, that capacitance of your xtal circuit is enough to excite oscillations. If summary capacitance of circuit and capacitors is too big, xtal oscillator may not work.

At 8 MHz You may have problems with your circuit. To reduce ringing You could close ends of path with terminators to avoid wave reflections.

No, because I don't have proper adaptor for these strange connectors on Atmel-ICE and JTAG on Due. With Due I can use only Atmel-ICE with JTAG and SAM-ICE with SWD.
