How to know registers having opcode?
The problem is that there only are space for 65536 opcodes and STD and LDD use 8192 of them, double that would be to many!

Pin change interrupts for counting
+1 to #4 Make a "heart beat" timer interrupt where you look for changes since last time. It will be cleaner in the long run.

I just took a look at the datasheet for tiny214 etc. and that also only say 1 clk   and xmega E manual also say 1clk.   I think it was something they had to fix when...

Simulator in Atmel Studio 7 (1931) not working
Since the value of Y come from the stack (IN from 0x3D and 0x3E), perhaps it's RAMEND that is wrong, or perhaps no init.

Not that this really matter for this thread but: sbi and cbi take 2 clk  out (and in) only take 1 clk.   Just have that in mind if we talk about speed.

Works the same with or without. Only in this very simple case but try to || two portpins and the the compiler have a problem

Watchdog Timer on the 328p makes a GREAT temperature sensor!
if you average N measurements, your resolution improves by SQRT(N).   but again you you will need to have noise or temperature changes for that to be true, if all readings...
