My first AVR project
Nice programmer and dev board! Love the drywall screws that are holding it down :) I also use a lot of the short drywall screws. Nice cheap screws for hobby uses.

I suppose the way to get feedback from the player to see if it is in on mode is to somehow see if it is drawing current from the battery...not sure how to implement that though...
