My bet is the ERE board is the cause somehow. You should use the ERE 4$ programming cable for the ERE board. It works great! Can you discern what part of the Dragon spewed forth...

You may do better to get an stk500. It should work with old stuff just fine :) It cost a bit more...but then you get more too.
