You should use the ERE 4$ programming cable for the ERE board.
It works great!
Can you discern what part of the Dragon spewed forth...

AVR ISP with USB? You may do better to get an stk500.
It should work with old stuff just fine :)
It cost a bit more...but then you get more too.

Questions on Making a Custom AVR Board... The 10pin connectors are just easier to find...that's why so many AVR project boards use them instead of say a 6pin.
I generally use a 7805 on my boards with a pretty hefty...
