DOH! I feel pretty stupid. They install the source patches along with the toolchain. I should have thought of that. Thanks! I think I will try giving it a build. :)

avarice much slower than AVR Studio
I forgot to mention... I am using a jtagice mkII. AVR Studio is running on windows and I am sing avarice in Linux. That may be important info.

A warning: The $150 JTAGICEMKII from Arrow
It did come with a spare, but something tells me I might need more than one. Maybe I an underestimating the quality of cable, but it seems somewhat fragile.
