Code is really bad. 50ms delays are huge for lcd to write one character :/ make it < 5ms in all your routines. Secondly i think ISR is not correct. Make it something like this...

Here are couple of things i am suspecting, correct me if i am wrong. DDRD= 0x02; //PORTD (RX on PD0) Remove this line, the uart hardware will take care of direction....
