I am working my way through Dean's USART tutorial and I am running into problems. I am using "Smiley's USB Thingie" to make the USART connection to my mega16. I get a proper echo if I connect TXD and RXD on the Thingie so I know everything up to that point works. I should be able to connect the Thingie and the mega16's USART pins directly because they both run at TTL level, right?

I assume "Smiley's USB Thingie" refers to the Smiley Micros BBUSB. If so, so long as you've set it up like in the BBUSB manual, then yes, you can directly connect it to the AVR. Make sure you swap Tx and Rx, otherwise you'll both be trying to talk and read on the same lines.

Thanks Dean.

You posted before I could post that I figured it out. I had indeed connected tx to tx and rx to rx. Once I swapped the connections, everything worked great.
