Hi All

Firstly i would like to thank David Prentice for very generously giving me one of these boards, very kind of you Sir.

I had time this weekend to try use the board however i have ran into my first challenge. I plugged the xplained sam4s pro board into my computer then started up atmel studio 7. Once it started up the xplained board was recognized. I then started a new project following this simple youtube video

When i click start debugging i expect the program to be loaded to the board however it gets stuck on "running" see picture

After this i get the following error:

Once i get this error the board no longer responds. It can also not be recognized in atmel studio 7 even after i restart the computer. I googled this issue and came across a possible solution by resetting the board by attaching a jumper wire from a via on the bottom of the board to 3.3v. This apparently resets the board?  Here is the link of the solution  https://www.avrfreaks.net/forum/bricked-my-sam4s-xplained-pro-no-device-detected-error-4109 . This allowed me to detect the board in atmel studio 7 again however i can still not program the board with the example program. i keep getting the same error as the picture i have included.

Ok i have solved the problem however i do not understand the problem.

Under programming settings i changed the "Erase entire chip" to "Erase only program area". After this the board could be flashed. I suspect there is code on the board that should not be erased? Well i hope this helps someone having a similar problem.
