Going to make a massive capital investment (it's OK - it will be tax deductible) on a usbasp for the first time - any reason to buy the £5.00-£6.00 ones on eBay as opposed to the £2.50-£3.00 ones?

I think that my one was $9 whatever this comes to in £s.

I wanted to have J1, J2, J3 and selectable 3.3V / 5V.

You get to see a photo of all of them. Can you see zener diodes? Can you see footprints for J2, J3 ?

On my $9 board, only the J1 header was populated. It only takes a moment to solder headers for J2, J3.

I frequently swap firmware. Hence I want J2.
I use J3 for 'other purposes'. Hence I want J3.

Most people just use the supplied firmware. So J2 is unnecessary for them.

However the 3.3V is VERY useful. I recommend that you choose one with this option.

I am 100% confident that the $6 versions will program all AVRs just fine. I do not believe any of the claims for AT89 parts.

David.

this is pretty cheap. Buy it and see for yourself.
Edit. this is like the one that I have I think you will find all versions have LEDs. They are just difficult to spot in SMD.

Can't see all the jumpers on that one (I would like all 3)

This one..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AVR-51...
...has all three jumpers plus some LEDs! But it's description starts with "AVR 51...". Does that matter?

EDIT: Doh. It's 5v only...

Thanks David - most helpful. Found the equivalent one on eBay UK (same price) and am now waiting for the postman to arrive (in 2-3 weeks I expect :()

I'm planning on installing the AVR ISP MkII firmware from http://avr.mytutorialcafe.com/?p=81 so that I can use it from CVAVR - any gotcha's?

Actually I bought one from this seller as well as a 10pin-6pin adapter and a couple of others things, it works as well as others usbasp, same speed. I updated the firmware and changes the fuses on it too.
