I haven an Atmel AVRISP mkii. I think ISP means In System Programmer or In-circuit Serial Programmer. The Thomas Fischl USBasp is an open hardware open software ISP programmer. I think either will program any AVR with MISO, MOSI and SCK pins. I think.

Most regular AVRs are programmed by SPI.
All programmers will do SPI mode. Some do TPI, PDI, JTAG, debugWire mode as well.

Different hardware programmer boards have different names. You really need to post a link to the ones you are interested in.

An ISP programmer is a hardware device whereas an ASP[.net] programmer is mostly a human being

ASP stands for AVR Serial Programmer.
The USBASP from www.fischl.de can program AVR's using the In System Programming ISP protocol.
With almost every AVR (f.i. the ATmega128 is an exception), the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) pins are used for this purpose.

Confusing ? Yes ;)

In most cases a USBASP, purchased on ebay for around $3-$4 US, will work well.
