I have a general question about USB-RS485 converters. Most of them (e.g. search "USB RS485" on ebay) have a connection for +5V or +9V. In your experience, do these devices require such external voltage, or will they also work from USB power? Of course, nobody can speak for all such devices, but I'd like to get a sense one way or the other.

I am purely a software guy and therefore probably not the best person to answer this. But we do use FTDI's USB-RS485-WE cables, and they certainly work just fine from USB power. They have a +5V wire, but it is output voltage that you can use to power your device. Otherwise it is not needed.
