Guys, could someone recommend a cheap USB protocol analyzer?

Doesnt wireshark sit inbetween the usb port and the driver using it and display the data? And its free....

sigrok can decode low-level USB :
Protocol decoders - sigrok

Ahhh, this bit came out AFTER your OP which I replied to.....

 

Then yes, you will need a hardware kit for your task.  Check ebay for deals
