Hi,

I'm looking for a simple USB master solution. The goal is to read USB joystick.
I was thinking about pure software solution but this is not the main factor. To be honest I'm not sure what USB microcontrollers are offered by Atmel now. I found ATmega8U2 but can't find them at Farnell. Is Atmel producing those chips or just preparing for production?

Unfortunately USB master/host solutions are less easier then USB device/slave solutions.

You need an USB AVR that can also acts as host, that's either the USB647 or the USB1287.

The MegaU series is "brand new", so not easy to find.

However, the AT90USB1287 is capable of this, combined with LUFA.

Thanks for the responses, now I have more clearer view.
AT90USB1287 cost 10€, USB647 11€. That's too much for my project. It seems good old PSX joy solution would be better.

@mogor

This guy did a whole set of articles on making a USB host shield for an Arduino:
