Anyone ever used one of these tiny-eye pickup sensors on an AVR? well it wont work at 5V, but it works at 12v.

reason I ask, because i need some kind of a circuit that takes the 0-12v pulses from pickups to 0-5V to drive an AVR int line so it dont destroy the CPU.

never thought about that.

I tried a transistor buffer but that ended up screwing up. it would pulse to 12V, and output is inverted at 0 volts obviously, but then when it would fall, it would only fall to 3V and not 0v to turn the transistor off.

We do a lot of 24 to 5 volt conversion with comparators like the LM2901, LM339, etc. Feed your 12 volt signal into the + input, feed in 5 volts to the - input, and hook your output to the AVR. These comparators are open-collector so you need a pullup to VCC on the output.

Depending upon your system's requirements, most likely, either the comparator or resistor divider would work. (Assuming this is a digital signal).

If it is many signals , you can use a 74HC4050 Hex Logic Level Down Converter (accepts 15v , and delivers 5v with vcc = 5v)

You can also use zener diode to clamp too high input signal to whatever is acceptable for you. Just add some resistor to protect diode.
