Should have learnt my lesson from Studio 5 which never worked properly but I figured that version 6 should be better surely?

Installed 6 and the SP1 patch. Start studio 6 and I keep getting a box saying it's waiting for something and in the console appears "TCF Command: Stream:setLogBits timed out" 3 times. No idea what it's trying to communicate with. Both an AVR One! and a Dragon are attached to the PC both of which work fine with Studio32.

Tried to change the default location for projects but each time I restart studio it reverts back to the original location.

Tried to create a simple gcc project, select the UC3 range but the list of processors is empty and the console now adds a very helpful "Exception of type 'System.Exception' was thrown" and no project is created. In fact there are no processors listed of any type!

Now saw that SP2 was available so ran the Extension Manager to check for downloads and it's been stuck in a not responding state for 30 minutes.

All this is under Windows 7 64 bit. I only tried Studio 6 as it seemed the simplest way of getting the latest ASF but now I figure I should just download the standalone ASF and work out how the hell to get that working with Studio32.

To add insult to injury I can find no evidence of the ASF anywhere within the install directory anyway!

Is it just me or are Atmel actively trying to discourage people from using their processors?

Well all I can say is that Studio 6 runs very well with my computers both running Win7 64!

The only issue I have is that it takes 90 seconds to start up on my laptop although it's relatively powerful!

Well I created a VM with a clean install of Win7 x64 and installed Studio 6 and it all installed and ran fine. The asf was there and I could create a project and import asf modules into it.

Back on my main machine it seemed that studio 6 was falling fowl of some firewall rules blocking incoming access. Having fixed those I uninstalled and re-installed studio 6. Result? No different.

Looks like I will have to work in a virtual environment.

Just tried again. Uninstalled studio 6 and then checked that all its files and registry entries had been removed. Also deleted any firewall rules relating to it.

Installed again, installed patch, no indication of any problems.

Run studio 6 and I get the busy waiting, then when it finally runs it's clear that it is not installed properly. The asf is certainly missing and it's files are not on disk either.

It definately does not like my machine at all. A bit poor that it gives no indication at all during the installation that large chunks are missing or give any clear error messages when things do fail.

Looking at the logs left behind by the install the principal log file (ironically with a name starting with AS5) contains the following:

Clearly something is failing when trying to install the ASF and the installer is not reporting this fact.

Does anyone from Atmel monitor this forum?

Why would a programmer arrange to output a 32bit hex number in signed decimal?!? Anyway that number is 0x800A01AD and when you Google that number you arrive at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/...

So it sounds like an issue with the XML parser installed on your system.

Thanks for that clawson but that code seems to be a generic error code returned by a lot of COM stuff.

The ASF install script is failing because it fails to find an entry in the registry even though I can read that entry using regedit. At the same time I have extracted the very bit of vbscript that is failing and run it in isolation and it works just fine.

I'm giving up. If I want to use this I'll use a VM to host it. Shame as we are in the early stages of choosing a processor for a new project and the UC3 was high on my list but unless I can come up with a better build solution I'm going to have trouble selling the idea.

If my understanding is correct then this is an indication that you need to install an update to the extension manager first. (Yes, this is a weird and strange jungle that Atmel has dropped us in, but nevertheless...).

There is a fairly recent thread in the AS6 forum about this, so it should not be too hard to locate.

No guarantees, but if we don't report problems they won't get much of  a chance to be fixed! Details/discussions at link given just above.

The patch is also released on atmel.com (http://www.atmel.com/tools/atmel...). The push through the extension manager is merely a step to get it out faster, as has been mentioned in older posts...

If you have some strange security settings/antivirus, it may help to disable antivirus etc while installing, an try to install Atmel Studio as administrator...

Also I would check for windows updates etc, as there may be something broken somewhere (tm)...

If I take this route does that patch include the previous fix for the extension manager?

No... The 1.1 version of the extension manager fixed the "big downloads" issue, however, to keep the sideeffects to a minimum (and also som legal things if my mind serves me right) it only contains fixes for the core of Atmel Studio

Ah ha I see that "Help - check for updates" now simply opens that very web page you just referenced. :-)

Only TWO things wrong with it though.

The Help-Update message box told me that 6.0.1822 was available yet the page presented says 6.0.1843

Oh and then this happened...

Scroll down and you will see the patch (patch2)

Quite possibly - I don't usually use IE on my machine (I use Firefox or Chrome). I think the IE may be V8.

Well, well.. If you decide to have MS as your steady bed-partner(s) you are bound to get their VDs sooner or later.

Normally I would take offense by that statement https://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=986162#986162 8)

A late comment. In the good old days when I was a supporter we swore silently at customers who said similar things. There is zero information content in "XXX not working". It does not tell anyone about the nature of the problem, it is also difficult for users who are seaching to see if their problem is also known.
Best wishes,
Nitpicker Jerry
