I just played w. a couple of m168 , fed directly of 5v.

They wouldn't operate if i set the BODEN at 4.3v , but started working at 2.7v , and there is no regulator or diodes in the VCC path.

Anyone else experienced that ?

I just tested mega168 20PU and is working according to the data sheet.
On the back is written:

8J3140-1
355B7D
1-P0931 e3

I tested on STK500, but measured the voltage directly to the micro's pins. What is weird is if I increase the voltage to the STK500 board slowly, it will never gives power to the micro. I have to power the board fast, or to use the board's ON/OFF switch.

Is AVcc hooked up and clean? At what level? All Gnd pins hooked up?

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

I've never met a pig I didn't like, as long as you have some salt and pepper.

Damm :-(

Spot on

It's a TQFP , and i had verified that there were 2 VCC connections , But AVCC was floating.
