Ok, I tried to reinstall AS7 entirely and then I get that message when it starts:

Still AS7 doesn't see Atmel-ICE.

If I check that XML log file at its very end I see two lines with error messages:

SetSite failed for package [BackendServicePackage] 80070057 - E_INVALIDARG Illegal characters in path.
End package load [BackendServicePackage] 80070057 - E_INVALIDARG Illegal characters in path.

I have no clue how to treat that data. Which path is meant there?

Anyone please help me to solve it, I'm really tired of that. Got that Atmel-based project from someone else and I need to work on it asap.

Uninstall Atmel Studio, and uninstall Visual Studio Shell, then reinstall Atmel Studio.

Thanks a lot, meolsen ! It works now!

So for the record I did the following:

1. Uninstall Atmel Studio

2. Uninstall all sorts of Atmel drivers

3. Manually cleaned up Windows Registry by removing all possible keys containing 'Atmel'

4. Uninstall MS Visual Studio 2015 Shell

5. Install Atmel Studio (I run installer as administrator, not sure if it was really useful)

6. Done

P.S. The thing called "MS Visual Studio 2015 Shell" comes with Atmel Studio. Fortunately, it doesn't interfere with MSVS 2017 which I use on the same machine.
