source for unusual connector

Perhaps Mill-Max makes what I want:

Fillet type socket. Install in hole in PC board. This socket accepts a standard header pin. But the socket is an open-ended cylinder, so the pin header slides through as far as I want.

Something like the -0334 in

Yep. I got some courtesy of peret for prototyping a while ago and then I got some from Digikey. I use them to plug in 100mm dot matrix displays so they can be easily removed for replacement and also for repair if any component needs to be unsoldered from under the display. (Components are on the other side)

You can also get then in a tape from Farnell IIRC.
