I am working with the a SAMV71 Xultra kit.I am able to mute the headphones by setting it to zero volume by using the command

    wm8904_write_register(WM8904_ANALOGUE_OUT1_LEFT, WM8904_HPOUT_VU | WM8904_HPOUTL_VOL(0x00));

I am able to set it to some volume by using the command:

    wm8904_write_register(WM8904_ANALOGUE_OUT1_LEFT, WM8904_HPOUT_VU | WM8904_HPOUTL_VOL(0x39));

The problem is I am unable to increase the volume futher.The volume is very low on the headphones. I used 0x80 and 0XFF but the volume did not increase. Could some one tell me how do I set the volume to maximum on this WM8904 codec?

Depending on the headphones, you may, already, be AT the maximum. This is particularly true if the headphones are low impedance, say under 100 ohms. That leaves you with a few choices:

1. Different headphones

2. An amplifier

The WM8904 has both mic and speaker/headphone volume commands. Earlier I was setting just the speaker volume and not the mic. But now I even set mic volume to high and it did work now.
