I can't find the meaning of the red square or black square in Atmel Studio 7 Solution Explorer.
See attached picture.
I am trying to find clues why the compiler can't find a file I just added to the project.
Red square means the file has been modified by me.
I am looking for the answer to this same question but the claim "Red square means the file has been modified by me." doesn't seem to be true.
Does anyone have further information on the meaning of a red and black square?
Is there a reference available explaining all of the tick marks used in the Solution Explorer. I couldn't find anything but I'm sure its out there somewhere.
Try searching "Solution Explorer icons"
Thanks, but I cannot seem to find the answer. I've posted a question on a Visual Studio forum and have not gotten any answers.
It's hard to believe how simple questions such as this can be so elusive.
Again, I appreciate your response.
take care -
Is it about revision control perhaps? Do you use a plugin such as AnkhSvn?
Hi Clawson -
No, I'm not using any revision control tools . I am using a brand new laptop computer with Windows 10 (my first). I just installed AS7 on this new computer then created a test solution.
The solution builds just fine as far as I can tell but then noticed the 'red squares' and was puzzled.

Now, apparently, they have arrived.
You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.
I've never met a pig I didn't like, as long as you have some salt and pepper.
You've been hacked by the ruskies.
Interesting that no one has come up with a definitive table.
If you have a source archiver hooked up to Studio, that could explain it. I don't know if that is possible with Atmel Studio.
@ paul.gaastra Did you ever get an answer to your original question?
It definitely isn't due to any sort of plugin or source control. I have a vanilla install of Atmel Studio 7 and I see both types of icons, sometimes on files, sometimes on folders.
I've been investigating and I think it may have to do with how the item is included in the solution. E.g. If I create a new ASF example project I get a bunch of folders with the empty black squares; if I add a new folder within solution explorer that folder doesn't have a square. Some insight may be gleaned by inspecting the .cproj file.
Are they not files where the parser has found errors ?
That's from memory - I'll test this properly tomorrow.
