And I thought it was only the JTAGICE3.

I can build, but when trying to debug I get an error message. "Unable to start your debug session"

Well that's not a common experience. The simulator is working just fine here in .2730 so it suggests your "backend" is broken (which would possibly also explaint he ICE3 problems you have had).

I'd uninstall/reinstall. If that doesn't work uninstall/clear Atmel from registry/reinstall.

I will try your suggestions. I am kind of running down on this. I am interested in the ARM products. I bought a TI TM4C123G LaunchPad, should be here in a few weeks.

In the last week, I have installed SP2 twice (on different machines) and back to SP1 build 2562 once already.

I was so used to using the JTAGICE3, I never tried the simulator on my first attempt at loading and using AS6.1 SP2.

Just checking but which model of AVR? I guess it's possible it might be one without simulator support.

EDIT: never mind - from another thread you mentioned 328P and 2560 - they should both have simulator support.

Any tool to do this? IE. clear Atmel/AVR from the registry. I have hundreds of entries going back to AVRstudio4.

Now the simulator is working.

I used the control panel "add/remove" software on all Atmel products, beginning with AS6.1 first.

Removed the Atmel directory in "Program Files".

Step1:
Ran ccleaner pro version.
Ran Free Registry Repair from Regsoft.
Ran Glary Utilities

Step2:
Then manually removed AVR entries from windows registry using Regedit.

Repeated Steps 1 & 2.

Step 3:

Removed Atmel references from the registry using Regedit.

repeated Steps 1,2,3.

rebooted after each iteration.

Reinstalled using the smaller installer.

Also now the JTAGICE3 is able to debug and program via JTAG to the ATmega2560. Believe JTAGICE3 FW at 2.15.
As contrary to information from Atmel, it is not automatically upgraded. (to version 3 from the downgraded 2.15).

However, when selecting "Tool Information" under device programing I get.
