Simplest way to use USB PD

Hello!

 

I'm creating very simple (as I thought) device. It receives commands by usb and moves stepper motor. And there is an issue: usb without power delivery supports only 5v and stepper motor needs more, at least 9V and up to 1 A.

 

I don't use usb phy and so on, I'm just using V-USB library to implement usb1.1 low speed device and it's enough for my task. So if it's possible to configure USB PD with bitbanging CC1 and CC2 pins of Usb Type-C port, it would be great. But if it is impossible, i'm looking for some as simple as possible  (and low pin) controller.

 

There are some IC from Ti, ST, etc. But i have never before used them and don't know what to choose

9V & 1A = 9W. The conventional way would be to use a boost switching supply. Then, input at 5V would be 1.8A. That is very high for any communicating USB port. USB 3.0 can negotiate up to 0.9A though standard without special request is 0.1A or 0.15A, depending on the USB version. A straight charger can give up to 5A but you cannot communicate over a charger link.

I'm talking about  usb type c, not usb 3.0.

I believe that USB-C still requires active negotiation to get the higher power level. But, once negotiated, then you should be able to communicate over that link.

 

The issue may well be the active device that provides the USB interface at the slave end. Your standard FT232R won't do that! Whatever you find is not likely to be inexpensive, especially right now.

Says who?   Almost any motor "needs" 1 Amp or more if you stall it. Make sure you aren't fooling yourself by saying "needs". Are you building a crane to pick up cars---you say nothing. Also, don't confuse peak motor current with capacitor smoothed supply current---have you already been considering this when you made your vague statements?  Do you need to take 1 step every hour or 10 steps a second?
