Samsung hikes semi prices by 20%
Only 20%?
this month!
I noticed some tiny avr's I bought in sept 2021 were $1.35, now $2.01 at Digikey.
You want to try buying heating oil, gas, petrol in the UK. If rises in the last month or two we're only 20% we'd be pigs in shit!
In other news a synth I got for my birthday last month was $199 but the Japanese manufacturer just announced an increase to $239 to cover transport and other spiralling costs. So that's another 20% increase. Welcome to the real World!
A vacant block of land in our street sold for AUD$2.165 million last Saturday. That is about 20% more than we paid for our block with a house on it in late 2019. I guess there is no more land being made.
I guess there is no more land being made.
Not true, in La Palma there was a bit more made last year.
But John, wasn't that new land on top of existing "land"?
In the real estate industry, subduction zones are your friends.
Neil
wasn't that new land on top of existing "land"?
Maybe but it was under the sea, now it has been added above the sea.
As soon as we go back into and ice age and the sea waters freeze then we will have more land until that ice age finishes and global warming melts all the ice and the sea level raises again.
I was looking at a Hackaday article from summer 2017, this was part of it
for grins I decide to look up today's price ....about a 39% increase...probably mostly in the last year
You’ve spent months developing your product, your Kickstarter just finished successfully, and now you’re ready to order all the parts.
Unfortunately, your main component, an ATmega328P, is out of stock everywhere with a manufacturer lead time of 16 weeks. Now what?
....2022...Be Thankful !!!

Why would anyone pay that when, with a bit of care, you can buy the real deal for £2.58 each. Which is what I've just paid for 80 pcs which now sit on my bench.
Why would anyone pay that
In certain countries under US technology embargo they would be happy to pay anything.
It is still not clear to me why all this all craziness happen. They said, at first, it is because of corona (not the beer) - yeah, nobody had a computer before and everyone has one now!
Then, it was some bad production planning - it looks like very profitable planning to me, for a lot of businesses and ultimately people...
Edit: typo

The Padauk chips are low cost.

It's a whole saga to develop a Mega128 clone. I find it an entertaining reading. http://forum.niiet.ru/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=147
Somewhat difficult to create an accurate ADC.

Delta-sigma ADC are bulk CMOS ready; accurate SAR ADC on bulk CMOS is a challenge.

RISC-V can be a part of some FPGA and is a part of some SoC; should be able to squeeze a RISC-V SoC by mature wafer fab processes.

@clawson: I totally agree with you about chip companies. They are subjected, like everyone else to inflation, energy and raw materials price hikes, etc. They need to survive, AND they produce something. What makes my blood boil are the crooks who take advantage of this situation and are into price gauging at large. This is a crime in many countries, but very rarely punished. I know of a purchase of an entire stock (hundreds if not thousands) of STM32 chips which normally retail for under 10€ at the very profitable price of 300€ a piece, to save a product. I would put such practice in the same boat with blackmail, extortion, racketeering, etc. and treat the crooks accordingly.
To me, this all "shortage" thing looks very artificial , very well planned, very well controlled and very profitable for some animals, while very damaging for the rest of us. I know, some may argue it is just capitalism at its best: a market driven by supply and demand. I just don't see it that way.
Edit- typo
Know what you mean. My wife was very lucky to get me a PS5 as all stock that was delivered was being bought up by criminal gangs then sold on at twice the price!
Friedman would have said that it is the market in action, not criminal activity. It only works - as, say, tickets bought up by scalpers for popular concerts or sports events - because people are willing to pay that sum for them.

Guys,
€10 to €300 is only thirty fold…
You are close to some of the chip prices I have been quoted. Last year saw two hikes per company and another earlier this year for most chip companies. Total is a minimum of 50% once compounded.
STM32H750IBT6. When I designed it into my new product it was £3.39 two years ago. A year ago it was mid £4.50-ish. Some of the electronics catalogues now list it as $12. The kicker is no one has any. If I want some from a Chinese source I will have to pay $280 per chip! Or wait for the manufacturer to pull my name out of his “who gets some this month” hat. That is 64-fold.
I sincerely hope someone lines up the profiteering ******* against sand bags when this is all over.
M.
I wonder if there is any shortage on 555's and 431's? 'cos just about everything is is near unobtainium.
It's probably a good time to be in the e-waste business harvesting chips.

The NE555 already as standard clock for Students.
