Back in December 2014, I wrote:
With low power being such an important thing these days - and Atmel trying to play to that - Atmel really need to get their act together on debugging with sleep modes.

 

Other manufacturers - eg, TI, Energy Micro (now SiLabs) - not only "cope" with it, but have specific features to analyse it!

Dunno if they've addressed the issues with the debugger in sleep modes, but the SAM L21 XPlained Pro board does now have supply current monitoring - and, allegedly, support for that in the Atmel Data Visualiser:
