Are there any reference bootloaders that are complete (ie AVR code plus a simple user front end) can be taken and used as-is with no mods required...?

...all with source code (both ends) so that mods/simplifications can be made if absolutely necessary

...my project is for a fairly non-IT literate community who just about has the ability to plug an RS232 cable into my device and a laptop/PC, invoke the PC side application, select the .hex file and press the "program" button. Maybe also select the .eep file and load that up as well. No need to do anything complex like setting fuses etc etc

Target AVRs are initially Mega8515 and Mega16

A nice to have would be auto-baud rate negotiation, by the way.... :)

Thanks, but hmm..the windows end is far too complicated (and I think I dowloaded it some time ago and there's a nasty nag screen at start up :( )

Maybe I'll have to reverse engineer the bootloader code to find out what it receives and write my own Windows app

I was just hoping not to have to do that....
