Hello, can anyone recommend a cable to interface my ISP-Loader (DB-25) to my laptop?? Thanks!

Does your laptop have a DB9 serial port or are you going USB?

If you are doing USB to serial- I suggest that you choose one that uses the FTDI chipset. Look for their logo.

Does your ISP-Loader (DB25) typically interface with a parallel port?

If so, and if your laptop doesn't come with a real parallel port, then you may be out of luck.

You may be able to use a PC Card->Parallel Port expansion. As well, some laptops' docking stations may include "real" parallel ports.

However, USB->Parallel dongles (including docking stations that communicate via USB) typically *won't* work, because those dongles and their Windows drivers are usually very specifically targeted for talking with printers.

If you cannot access a "real" parallel port for your laptop, or if the PC Card expansion is prohibitively expensive, then I'd recommend you join the 21st century and go USB. Don't bother with any "USB->RS232-> Programmer" bodges; they would just add unnecessarily to the complexity of the chain and would most likely slow you down.

Especially if you thought about moving to one of the cheap bit-banged serial-port programmers; if you try to use them with a USB->RS232 dongle you will experience unavoidably S...L...O...W programming speeds because USB isn't optimized to handle data that way.

Look for a native USB programmer like the AVRISP mkII. It is most likely to be upgraded for future support, and it's the fastest ISP programmer you can get your hands on right now.

If you cannot find one, then your next best bet may be an original AVRISP (or clone) plugging into your laptop's "real" serial port or an external USB->RS232 dongle, or a modified AVRISP clone with an integrated USB->serial transceiver (www.ere.co.th sells one).

I have tried to interface the DB-25 with a USB serial cable..no luck! Unfortunately I may have to go back to the desktop. I have installed a 2x5 header on my board! Thanks anyway

Probably AVRISP MkII will cost less money than any of the alternative solutions. And if you take into account the time you will spend trying to use these other solutions, plus the problems with support that use to appear with them, probably AVRISP MkII would be, by far, the best solution. It's worth the 40€ it could cost.

Is the AVRISP MK11 pin compatible with the STK200? I will buy one for future use if so!! Last night, per MCS recommendations, I purchased a USBISP from BIPOM. $64 dollars!!!

The AVRISP mkII yields a 6-pin programming cable. An adaptor would be required to get the 10-pin connection that a traditional STK200-type dongle has.

If you need the 10-pin connector and you cannot produce an adaptor, then an original AVRISP clone with an integrated USB is a good next choice. www.ere.co.th sells such a device, ISPAVRU1, for US$34.28. It has a 10-pin output with an identical pinout to the STK200, and includes an adaptor to the new 6-pin pinout.

This would make a good transitional tool; you can use it on all your legacy (10-pin) designs, and gradually transition over to the new (6-pin) layout. Once you've finished the transition and no longer need to program any 10-pin designs, you can abandon this programmer in favour of the technically superiour AVRISP mkII.

The benefit of either of these devices over the BiPOM programmer is that they can both be used directly within AVR Studio and a gowing variety of other 3rd-party software as well, whereas the BiPOM programmer only seems to be supported by BASCOM.
