Was looking at developing some atmel touch stuff with AVR. I was wondering if the the QT600 touch kit is a purely software based solution to touch interface or if it uses any of atmel's touch ICs.

If it is purely software based what would be a good way to get started developing some touch interfaces using their touch ICs?

I thought "Qtouch" was a software only solution you could use in any AVR? As far as I know Atmel supply it as a precompiled binary library. The QT600 is surely just a platform with some suitable capacitive areas laid out to act as "buttons"?

As far as I know, even the very first QT-chips were software-solutions based on Holtek, PIC, and - of course - Atmel.
