Project Advice Needed: Ethernet or RZ Raven?

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for some advice as I start my new project. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel so I'm wondering if anyone has seen other projects that I can learn from.

I've been toying around with an LED matrix for quite some time and have finished off some PCBs that make it one nice package. (http://www.instructables.com/id/...). I've left a header avilable for I2C and I'm thing of making it into an RSS ticker by developing a controller board that interfaces with my home network.

So here's the question. Should I do this through 1) An Ethernet connection? or 2) The RZ Raven?

1) I figure the Ethernet connection would probably be the easiest. I figured I would need an ethernet module that would connect to a microcontroller that would be I2C master to the LED matrix's I2C slave. Any suggestions on ethernet modules or AVR's for the controller?

2) I was one of the lucky ones that got the RZ Raven free from Atmel as a promotion. So far the complexity of it has kinda scared the crap out of me and I haven't really gotten my hands dirty with it yet. My thought would be that the breakout pins on one of the raven boards could be used for an I2C connection and then I could have a wireless RSS ticker. Has anyone used the Raven for RSS yet?

Not RSS but I have a Raven passing along TWI packets received via a 1284P header. Using the AVR2002 RES-RAVEN code (GCC), adding the AVR311 TWI slave code, and running the DC test (blanks the LCD), the Raven sleeps for 5 seconds or until it receives a TWI packet, then transmits it the USB stick. Adding the TWI master code is probably as straightforward. You can easily hack the RES> command line interface for PC<->RZUSBSTICK communication, probably no need to reprogram the stick.

But I haven't done anything with the LCD display yet.
