Anyone have any solutions?

I have to mess around clicking the different tabs and attemping to read the signature on both ATMEGA8515 as well as ATMEGA162 before I read a valid signature and then can program the device!

I tried different voltage levels as well as other chips from those two families.

Thanks

It sounds somewhat like what I experience with the JTAG-ICE.
On the serial port of my old maching, it works.
On the USB->Serial on my up-to-date machine, it doesn't. Usually I would then use the download tool to read the signature bytes, and then it would be able to connect to the ICE. That is, I used to. The trick no longer works for me. I have four JTAG-ICE's, so It isn't a broken ICE. My own programs talk to it perfectly well over either interface.
Buggy software.

Sounds very simular!

The board settings area of the STK500 don't seem to affect the outcome either. It will eventually allow me in for programming whether set to 3.69 mhz @any of the frequencies of 460 khz or lower.
