Price difference ATXMEGA256A3B / U

Hi,

Why is there such a large price difference between ATXMEGA256A3B-AU (USD8.09) and ATXMEGA256A3BU-AU (USD4.06)? Prices are from Digikey.

From what I can tell the only difference between the two is the USB support that if anything should make the ATXMEGA256A3BU more expensive, not 50% cheaper.

It appears to be a deliberate ploy by Atmel to phase out the buggy old Xmega designs and replace with the USB enabled chips that generally have most of the problems fixed. There seems little reason not to by the "U" chip every time.

(the cost reduction might also indicate that it's fabricated on a smaller geometry process because at the end of the day it's silicon area that you pay for).

Got it confirmed from Atmel. The price difference is to make everyone choose the -U versions that don't have the known bugs from the none -U editions.
