Hello everybody.
It seems that there is a problem with avr studio 4 in windows xp.
In particular i have installed both avr studio 3.53 and 4 but only studio 3.53 can flash code to stk500, studio 4 finds the stk500 but when it enters programming
mode, after 5 seconds it says FAIL and cannot exit programming mode.
Any clues?
Thank you for reading this.

I haven't tried it yet under XP, but I have a problem with it on Win2000 with STK500/501 and a Mega128. It won't read the device signature (returns 0xFF in all three bytes) and won't read the device flash (returns 0xFF in all bytes.)

The same hardware works fine under 3.53 on the same PC and OS.

I saw a message go by earlier which said that the IO drivers needed to be installed with administrator rights under Win2000.

Thank you for your answer.
I am the sole person that uses the computer and i have administrator rights.
But when you say io files what do you mean?
Are there any additional file that must be also installed separatly?

Can I ask you who have had problems with the STK500 on Studio 4 to check that you have actually selected a programming mode on the Program tab of the dialog. There seems to be a flaw with the first time initialization of the dialog so that no programming mode is selected.

No other files than those installed by the installation program are neccessary to use all functions in AVR Studio 4 .

Svenn-Ivar e-mailed me regarding the problem I had with the STK500/501, and indeed, it was due to no initial programming mode having been selected. I set for ISP, and all appears to be well.

Svenn-Ivar was absolutely right and flashing the STK500/501 works now perfect.
Thank you for your help....
