It appears the 165 and 169 chips are being phased out and replaced with the new 165P and 169P chips. The just released 165 and 169 data sheets have “Notice: Not recommended in new designs” on the first page.

New RoHS compliant chips perhaps? I'm sure they will be compatible with their predecessors.

If Atmel follows its usual course of action, it will produce a migration document that will point out any register- or pin incompatibilities that may exist between the 165/9(V) and the 165/9P.

IMHO they probably won't introduce any significant incompatibilities.
