Sorry. It's hard to remember to avoid idiomatic English and common sayings. I notice it with some of Cliff's postings - the British versions of a lot of expressions sound strange over here.
Anyway, when something is expensive it's sometimes likened to costing "your firstborn child," meaning it's beyond value. Another phrase is "costing an arm and a leg," and has about the same meaning.
David, your English is so excellent it's difficult to imagine it's not your first language.
