Can I install these in parallel with new AS versions without breaking things?
Yes, you can. I have 4.18, AS6_2, and AS7 on one machine and they get along just fine.
Keep in mind though that if you have AS7, and install AS6_2 the 6_2 installer may install an older version of Microsoft Visual Studio. From what I gather, software developed on older versions of Visual will not work on the newest version and vice versa. I must have six instances of visual studio on this one machine either because the software is not capable of seeing that it's installed, or that Microsoft cannot have a common platform and the platform uses what is needed for the software that is running on it.
Keep in mind I am not running just Atmel software on this machine exclusively, but other products that also use this irritating platform.
