(thinks: is this the right forum for questions about MPLABX? - perhaps the forum name needs to be more general)
So I don't like MPLABX but there is the odd question here about it and I do like to learn new stuff so I was 99% certain I installed it on a Windows machine the other day.
Then there was another question about using MPLABX so I went to run it.
Could I find it?
I sort of assumed that if I typed "MP" or "Microchip" or similar into Win10's start menu it would get to it. I can certainly find Microchip Studio 7 that way but nothing came up.
At this stage I thought it was an age/memory thing. At my age you DO forget stuff and I began to believe I had never installed it at all.
So, anyway, I went trawling through \Program Files\ and \Program Files (x86)\ but I could not find it.
In my Downloads folder I found I still had an install file for MPLABX so at this stage I started to wonder if I had downloaded it but never installed it.
So I ran the install again. I sort of assumed that if I had previously installed it this thing would pop up and say "found it, do you want to repair it?" but it appeared to do a full install so I thought I must have been wrong about installing it previously.
When the installer ended I was kind of hoping for a "run it now?" option but it just gave 3 options about downloading other stuff I wasn't interested in so I just closed the installer assuming I would now find something new in Start menu.
But there was nothing new listed there?!?
So in the end I just searched my drive for "mp*.exe" in the hopes that the name would start with "mp". I finally found it in:
Now I presume it was actually there previously and I somehow over-looked this when searching the first time.
But my point here is that I seem to have installed it twice and on both occasions it appears to have entirely failed to add anything to my Start menu to let me easily run it ?!?
Am I just unlucky or is there something wrong in the installer? If you don't follow one of those last 3 (optional!) choices to download other stuff does that mean the installation step to add a Start menu entry never occurs ?
At least I can some back to this post in future as an aide memoire to know where to find the .exe I need to run !
EDIT: oh wait a minute. I just had a hunch that it might have put an icon on my desktop and...
But here's the thing - I never see my desktop. I never turn my computer off so it never reboots to a clean desktop (unless IT force an update) and I generally usually have about 20..40 windows open so every bit of the desktop is always covered. So puttiig icons on Desktop is no use to me. Also I kind of object to programs messing with the desktop anyway unless the installer specifically asks "do you want desktop icons?" and I permit it.
Why are there no group/icons added to the Start Menu itself?
