A winner (no names mentioned) in the Atmel AVR Design Contest 2006 using the above parts.

As far as I can work out this device would only be able to send email messages over an Ethernet connection. My understanding is that you need either SLIP (unsupported) or PPP to use this device over the internet. Or have I missed something important!

I am interested in this device as it could permit me to access email from a remote (low power) site.

Well the ENC28J60 is a MAC/Phy so the fact is that it's connection to the "internet" will be a piece of CAT5 Ethernet cable to the Ethernet router that connects your site to the internet.

Your mention of SLIP/PPP suggests the use of a modem as these are link protocols on such a link that encapsulate the TCP/IP while a MAC/Phy connection to a network suggests Ethernet carrying TCP/IP

So, no, if you are talking about needing a "dial up" solution then this project is not what you are looking for.
