I've been having quite a hard time locating single row 0.100" sockets that will take a standard 0.025" square pin. Machined pin break-off sockets are available but they're too small to take the square pin. In particular I need sockets that can take 28 pins. Any ideas where these suckers can be found?

Samtec also makes them and they are available through DigiKey. Not sure about units of 28, though. They (DK) were selling 50's but have stopped stocking them.

From your post, it is unclear to me if you want something that will mount on a PCB or something that will be part of a cable.

Assuming you want the "standard" 0.100" spacing (none of that metric junk!)

Former:

Latter:

Note, they are not in stock at Digikey, but appear to be in stock at http://www.onlinecomponents.com

Also, for the cable solution, you could always go with a 28x2 solution and only use one side (but that's a bit of a hack).

Science is not consensus. Science is numbers.

Sorry for not being clear that I'm looking for PCB mounted parts. Those Digikey ones look just right and the price is not insane like the few I located. Hearty thanks to all for the help!

Next time you might give search on ebay ...maybe save yourself some money

if you are in the usa for example
Item number: 220757643010
10 pcs 1x40 Pin 2.54 mm Single Row Female Pin Header
$6.29 includes shipping!

if you are closer to asia they are even cheaper!
just do search for Header in
Business & Industrial > Electrical & Test Equipment > Connectors, Switches & Wire > Connectors, Plugs & Sockets > Connectors

super easy to cut to length
1. pull out female pin with needle nose pliers where you want to cut
2. cut with xacto knife or wire snips
done!
