Liquid Level Sensor

Hello to all!

I want to use a sensor(liquid level sensor probably), in order to detect when the water in a tank exceeds a specific height.
Does anyone with previous experience have something to suggest to me??

Been thinking about getting a level sensor to my bathtub. Laziness or whatever has stopped me so far.
My plan is to have two wires sitting at the same (correct) level inside bathtub, not connected with each other. One of them connected to AVR GND and the other going to an AVR pin (input with pull-up). When water level reaches both wires they will be shorted by the water and input of AVR pin goes low.

Better not have a squeaky-clean tub and distilled water. ;)

If I use distilled liquids it's not water. :D

A pressure sensor at the bottom of the tank is the best way to do it.

Search the web for QT114 or QT350. This can be adopted to the Qtouch library from Atmel.

I do this type of stuff for my job with industrial tanks.

Your basic options are (if you only want to discrete level detection):

-a pressure sensor at the bottom of the tank as Leon said
-a float switch at target height (I recommend this, most robust and simple)
-ultrasonic sensor (overkill for simple on/off application)
- a conductor switch as Lennart mentioned (might be hard to get it to work right because it relies on external factors etc.)
- Capacitance rod (probably hard to find cheap ones)
