Anyone found one brand of LCD Char displays better or worse in terms of ESD causing it to require reinit to get working again? Any other fixes found for this problem?

No. Tackle the source, not the effect ... I'd recommend. F.i.:
Shield the cable and the LCD, ...
Add snubbers if necessary, ...

If the LCD has a metal frame around the display, make sure that frame is grounded!

I had one brand of lcd that kept on blowing up.

Complaining to the manufacturer did not help but changing brand of lcd did help. :?

I lost some money on service calls to replace the dead lcd, once I changed the brand of lcd did not have anymore problems.

The problem i have was related to interrupts in Bascom AVR
when i disable the Interrupts just before i write to the lcd, all the problem was gone..
