Just got a new JTAGICE3 today, updated the firmware, and tried it with the latest AS5 (5.0.1163). Will not halt at any breakpoints. This has been reported as a problem months ago with the MkII as well. Definitely a problem with AS5 itself.

And this has apparently been going on for months without a patch?

Can anyone suggest an alternate debug environment that works?

One other thing: the JTAGICE3 user guide is pitifully lean. Example: I'm trying to figure out how to single step and use hardware breakpoints and other "advanced" debug features on a mega328p but can't find any direct references. So I'm guessing the 328p/debugWIRE won't support them as they just don't show up in the AS5 menus.

debugWIRE only has software breakpoints; JTAG has hardware breakpoints.

Can you post the project which shows such a kind of error. And i need to know what is the advantage you get when you use hardware breakpoints rather than software ?

Atmel t.s. just confirmed the problems I'm having with breakpoints (and related commands) and an inability to download code to the mega328 target. They claim they have reproduced the problems "with more devices" and that "this seems to be a bug."

To me this is no revelation, given so many having the same issues. Even though I asked, I got no indication when a fix was coming or that one was even being worked on.

I see the same "say nothing" strategy repeated across so many tech companies now. They have all apparently learned that the majority of customers will take the abuse and keep coming back for more. Our training is complete.

I'm returning my JTAGICE3 today. Good luck to everyone else who still has theirs. Moving on...

Well for one it doesn't wear the flash of the target AVR.
