From reading other postings, it appears the JTAGICE MKII is not just an upgrade of the original JTAGICE with debugWIRE added. The new MKII appears to be missing some functionality and some processor chips in its support list. ATMEL did say the MKII AT90CAN128 support will be added to in the next AVR Studio software release, but the MKII still seems to be missing some other stuff.

It would be nice to have debugWIRE for future projects, but I want maximum functionality for the ATMEGA128 soon and AT90CAN128 later, even if I have to skip having debugWIRE. Does anyone think the MKII will completely catch up with original sometime in the future or should I just get the original JTAGICE and forget the MKII?

What functionality and "other stuff" did you hear that the Mk2 is missing?

AFAIK no JTAG functionality is missing. The Mk2 is not supported by IAR's tools right now, but I have heard in other threads that they are expecting it to be supported in September.

Hi,

You can get an MKII - and build your own JTAG ICE if you want. The JTAG ICE is an extreamly simple board, with basically just a Mega163 on it. Google for BOOTICE.

i see the follwoing problems with mkII:
1) mkII is not supported by c-spy until end of this year
2) data-breakpoint are not available

and mkII is still not able to set software breakpoints.

so the only advantage is the higher transfer speed when it comes to loading the program memory.

So it seems that data-breakpoints is the only thing missing from the mkII that the original JTAG-ICE was capable of. Software breakpoints dont work with the original JTAG-ICE either. And C-SPY, if that matters to you.
