Ok, please pardon the lame newbie question, I'm just getting started with Atmel parts.

I've decided to plunk down the bucks for a JTAGICE MKII, so that (as I understand it) I can program pretty much everything *and* get a debugging interface to pretty much everything. Please drop clues on me if I am wrong about that.

Here is my question: Is there anything a AVRISP MKII can do that a JTAGICE MKII can *not* do? Like will the JTAGICE do ISP programming, or only JTAG programming?

TIA

The MK II can do ISP programming, however depending on your needs you might want to check out the AVR Dragon
http://atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=3891
it should do everything you need unless you anticipate huge programs > 32kb also it does high voltage programming which im pretty sure my MK II doesnt do.

Also, I believe the JTAG ICE mkII can only do ISP through generic SPI
commands, at least that's what is documented in appnote AVR067. This
feature has originally been designed only to allow setting/clearing
fuses (think of DWEN here). If the actual implementation still
matches the description in the appnote here, this means using it for
ISP will be a lot slower than genuine ISP programmers like the STK500
or AVRISP(mkII).

Jörg: re-check AVR067. Section 5.1.28 starting on page 45 documents how the JTAGICE mkII can interpret any AVRISP version 2.xx packet if it's properly encapsulated.

Thanks Luke, I just noticed that myself. (I already wondered what
they've been updating there in 04/06, unlike the datasheets, there's
no change log in these documents.) Sigh :), yet another thing to add
support for in AVRDUDE...
