I'm having comunication problems with an JTAGICE when running on the command line with avr32program. For example...

sudo avr32program -c USB program --erase -f 0 --offset 0x700000 --verify --format bin splash.bmp

Connected to JTAGICE mkII version 4.1, 4.3 at USB.
JTAG communication failed. Check connection.

Another JTAGICE I've borrowed works okay on the same system. I notice it reports as..

Connected to JTAGICE mkII version 4.9, 4.22 at USB.

Does this imply my JTAGICE has a too old a version of firmware installed? If so, how do I update the firmware?

Installer for the AVR command line programming tools for STK500, AVRISP, AVRISP mkII, AVR Dragon, JTAGICE and JTAGICE mkII. The installation is a sub-set of the AVR Studio 4 installation, and does not contain files related to the AVR Studio GUI, the help system, or the ICE50 emulator. Users that already have AVR Studio 4 installed do not need to install this package.

That's a .exe file that you link to, so not likely to work for me. I've only have Linux boxes :-( Is there an updater for that runs on Linux?

I've installed AVR32Studio on Linux, but I don't use it, preferring the command line utilities. I tried it today to see if it would update the firmware but I don't see an option and it can't connect with my JTAGICE either. Is there a way to update via AVR32Studio?

No, sorry. AVR32 Studio does not (yet) support upgrading of the JTAGICE mkII.

So, how do I up date my JTAGICE? Or, do I have to buy a new one?

If I found someone with a PC running, say Vista Home for example, could I update the JTAGICE and and then use it under Linux?

Ignore this.

I did find someone with a Windows PC and have updated the firmware. However I now get..

Connected to JTAGICE mkII version 5.28, 5.28 at USB.
JTAG communication failed. Check connection.

As my H/W is know to work with another JTAGICE mk II (version 4.9, 4.22 at USB.), should I start suspecting that my JTAGICE Mk II is broken?

I went away, had a coffee, came back and it's working. Guess I tuned the board/ICE on in the wrong order, or something the first time.

Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem.

I am using EVK1100 with JTAGICEmkII.

I keep getting the message:
avr32program program -finternal@0x80000000,512Kb -e -v uc3a0512-gpio_example.elf
Connected to JTAGICE mkII version 5.28, 5.28 at USB.
JTAG communication failed. Check connection.

I have upgraded my JTAGICEmkII version from 4.22 to 5.28 and the problem still does not go away.

Using the same JTAGICEmkII I can program an NGW100 board. So I am assuming that the device is working.

The EVK1100 board boots up with the control panel application and also enumerates as a USB mass storage device. So the board is working.

Further, when I turn the EVK board, I press teh joystick button, which makes it boot in some other mode. I am not sure why I though about doing that.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Usually this problem is caused by incorrect probe attachment, either mounted the wrong way or "off-by-one". If you're certain your connection is correct, try reading the target voltage by running avr32program getvtg. If the results seem ok, try avr32program cpuinfo, or even avr32program chiperase if you're ok erasing the flash and fuses (but I guess that's fine since you were going to program it anyways).

Maybe it's a bad soldering?

My Bad....
I had the programmer plugged in backwards.
Should read the silkscreen on the board more carefully.

Thanks for your help Tore.
