Does anybody know an alternative JTAG programmer other than the JTAG ICE MKII? I looked at the price of one of these and it is > $100. I am using the STK500 board and would like to use JTAG.

Do you want JTAG programmer as you stated, or JTAG debugger?

Have you looked at Atmel's Dragon?

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

I've never met a pig I didn't like, as long as you have some salt and pepper.

I am looking for a JTAG debugger. Sorry for the confusion. I guess I can use a JTAG ICE and a USB to serial converter to connect it to my PC USB port.

The JTAG ICE mkI only supports a very limited range of older AVRs.

I guess the big question is which models of AVR do you plan to debug? If 32K or less then the $50 Dragon will do all you require (and if you search here you'll find a thread that even explains how it can break the 32K barrier)
