Hi everyone,

Sorry if my topic is redundant but I didn't find a clear answer to my questions.
I am studying electronics. I use Atmel studio 7 with the atmega 32A and 128A on devlopement board. For the moment, I use an Usbasp programmer.I would learn debugging.
I have the opportunity to buy second hand a genuine Jtag Ice mk2(70 €).Is this model completely outdated? I wanted to know if the Jtag Ice mk2 is fully working with Atmel Studio 7?
Is it better to go straight to buying an Atmel Ice basic (110€)?

Thanks a lot for your response,

If someone gives you a used JTAGICE-2 for 20 Euro it would be wise.

70 Euro is a lot of money when you can buy a new Pickit4 for about 50 and a SNAP for about 20.  You will need to make your own Adapter board and ribbon cable e.g. from a scrap of protoboard.

There are often special discounts for PK4 and SNAP.

David, thank you very much for your quick response. Indeed, I did not consider things from this angle.
I was wondering if the Jtag Snap and the PickIt 4 were recognized and as functional in AS7.
I read that MpLab X was still only in beta for AVR, is it stable now and a better IDE choice ?

Thanks  for your response ,

Both SNAP and PK4 work fine in AS7.0.   You need to install latest version of AS7.0 and Packs.

MPLABX is a bit clunky for debugging.    You need MPLABX to upgrade SNAP firmware

AS7.0 is much better for debugging.

Thanks David, this forum is a wealth of information. I think I understood the procedure to update the Snap and use it in AS7.

I ordered an Mplab Snap, it seems a great choice to start debugging. For the moment, I want to use the Jtag, I don’t need to make any hardware changes (R48 desoldering and Pull up 1K)? This change is only to use the PDI bus?

Thank you again, I will keep you posted as soon as I receive it!
