Is it OK to splice thermocouple wire?

I have a metal part whose temperature I want to monitor with a K type thermocouple.  This part screws into the machine it's a part of for periodic removal and reattachment.  For my purposes, I can just use some Kapton tape to attach the thermocouple to the outside of the part, but screwing and unscrewing the part in and out of the machine would be awkward given the long wire the thermocouple is attached to.  If I cut the wire so there's just a short pigtail hanging from the part, attach a thermocouple connector to it and the remaining, original wire, I could unplug the thermocouple when I need to remove the part, and then plug it in again when the part is reattached, with a lot less bother from the pigtail when screwing/unscrewing the part .  Would cutting the wire and reconnecting it through the connectors compromise the signal?  Thanks.

Dissimilar metals create a thermocouple, so this is why you have specific thermocouple connectors to minimise the effect. In answer to your question - using the correct connectors is a valid way to solve your problem. Make sure you get the connectors the right way around! + to plus wire, - to minus wire.

Can an IC be at a reasonable temperature relative to the thermocouple?

If yes then cut copper wire (one pair)

No, I believe that's exactly why they make these connectors.  I frequently just use ring terminals.  I would use the connectors, but the ring terminals are more rugged.

Can you drill and tap a small M3 hole in this part body?

If yes, you can use a thermocouple with an eyelet proper to use on screws.

So, it would be easier for you just to hand screw a M3 standof through the eyelet and hold the TC against the part.

Easier and faster than messing with the TC wire, connectors, etc.
