Hi,
Is it possible to interface crystal with ATtiny88? Does external oscillator circuit is needed?

A crystal directly, no. A crystal oscillator, yes.

Wow, I did not realize that. That chip only has a CLKI (CLocK Input) pin. So, you cannot make a crystal oscillator using an active element inside the Tiny88.

That means that if you need precise timing, you must use an external full (that is, stand-alone) oscillator. You could make one from a single-gate logic device, a transistor, or a purchased complete oscillator.

Unless one is making a kazillion of something, the Tinyx8 family is kind of crippled (**) --use Megax8. Lessee--qty. 100 prices TQFP:

Tiny88 -- $1.60
Mega88A -- $1.80
Mega88PA -- $2.00

** -- It depends on the app, of course, but the Tiny doesn't have crystal provisions, no USART, no MUL, half the SRAM, smaller EEPROM, low pin drive, no Timer2.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

I've never met a pig I didn't like, as long as you have some salt and pepper.

"Tiny88s got no reason to live"

Apologies to Randy.
