I think this is a positive development, maybe now it will be easier to get a few bugs corrected.

It seems I'm the only avrdude user that finds terminal mode useful, so I found a few bugs nobody reported yet. I'd like them fixed, in fact probably I'll submit the fixes myself once the transition to github is complete and the dust settles.

Why was it not already on github? Was it not open source?

It was on Savannah which has been around for decades and that could have become as successful as github, but didn't really in the end.

Of course there are those that have their reservations about github, especially since Microsoft took over but I've always thought it excellent, both then and now.

Open source means everyone can look at the source code. It can be posted in any public place, doesn't have to be GitHub.
