I use AVR Studio 4.18, build 700. I throw an error in at the end to find out how long my program is (error report complains that it is on line one thousand whatever....) Is there any other way to find out my program length besides this cheap method?

Why do you care?
You can easily keep the preprocessed output and generated asm :

wc -l module*.c module*.i module*.s

IMHO, as long as the hex code fits in the chip, everything is fine. avr-size shows flash, eeprom, SRAM usage (and percentage full)

Press Ctrl-End and look at the line/column counter reading in a bottom right screen corner (Ln XXX, Col YY).
