Hi folks,

Has anyone any experience working with HDMI signals and in particular producing picture-in-picture for HD?

A client has just asked for a device that...

Quote:

1) Has 2 x HDMI inputs and one 1 x HDMI output.

2) Scales HDMI input 2 to '960 x 540'.

3) Overlays HDMI input 2 on HDMI input 1.

4) Sends the combined video out to the HDMI output.

Obviously not an AVR topic, but hey you guys "have been everywhere, man" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-... )

Thanks,

Ross

I don't know if such a device or chip itself exists, but the feature might be included in some larger system. Some HDMI chips that are designed for audio amplifiers (and other media hubs) are able to provide picture-in-picture, but only a smaller window for preview purposes, and the quality may not be what you expect.

For any serious quality, a video processor/scaler is necessary.

Can't help noticing that Raspberry Pi has HDMI out but the issue will be handling the two inputs. Also is there any chance that HDCP is involved? - if so all bets are off.

This is the sort of thing the client wants to do...he will be the provider of the advertising content around the live feed.

Hi Ross,

Search for Digital Signage / advertising. Something like this http://www.anewtech.net/catalog/digital-advertising-digital-signage-video-wall-controller.pdf

If this fits your requirement, there are quite a number of companies make this.

No experience; recommend asking at AVS Forum by AV Science (Rochester, NY).
From search on their forum of "hdmi picture in picture":

Thanks for all the suggestions. My client is already in the digital signage business. Just looking to cut his costs further and become less dependent upon his current technology/supplier.

Cheers,

Ross

He's not looking for PiP, he's looking for a vision mixer.

The above statement is not necessarily all that helpful since I can't point you at one. Most vision mixers take baseband or HD SDI digits in... 'tain't cheap.

I'd go for an embedded PC with two HDMI capture cards and do the scaling/mixing in software.
